Dear Parents,
Thank you for joining us last night at our Night at the Waxworks. It was wonderful to see you & your guests participating in the event and supporting the girls with their ‘performances. The girls have worked so hard to meet this milestone and I applaud them all for their brilliant efforts. I am so very proud of them.
This week in 6S has been totally about preparing for last night. On Monday I provided feedback to the girls regarding the first drafts of their biographies (which were submitted last Friday). The girls then used that feedback to improve upon their work and also wrote and rehearsed their questions before putting the biography into the magazine template. Peer assessments also took place and valuable tips for ‘improvement’ were suggested.
Valuable skills have been developed along the way and we will reflect on these skills in class next week. This reflection will provide useful information as we lead into Exhibition in Term 3. One tip I am sure the girls will take away with them is to carefully review and consider the rubric in order to set goals and meet desired outcomes.
PHOTOS will be placed on the Blog early next week.
In Maths we completed a module on 3D shapes and next week we will study transformations. The girls continue to enjoy the novels being studied and the conversations in our literacy cu=ircles certainly reflect this enjoyment.
With this very brief update this week, I wish you all a restful, safe weekend.
Warmest regards,
Jillian
Dear Parents,
As you are aware, I will unfortunately be taking leave for four weeks during this term (Week 5 to the end of Week 8) with plans to be back for the final week of term. I am taking leave to care for my parents who are both unwell at the moment. I have been meeting with Sarah Den Hartog to plan the curriculum for the 4 weeks that I am away, so that a seamless transition will be made. I know that Sarah plans to be in touch with you very soon.
This week we have been working very hard to research our significant Australians and to write the first drafts of the biography. These drafts were submitted today for assessment against the rubric, which had been given to the girls last week.
The next stage of the process is to thoroughly edit and proofread the biography so that it can be copied and pasted into a magazine template. Most of the girls have volunteered their parents to assist with making any necessary corrections in readiness for Monday. Thankyou in advance for your assistance with this stage, as there is limited amount of time for me to do all of the fine tuning. The girls have been using Google Docs for writing the biography. Could I please ask that the “POSH” version of the Biography be shared with me as well?
On Monday, we will produce a magazine style article using the Google app “Lucid Press” and this published article will be attached to the Magazine cover that has previously been designed. The girls will also create 5 open-ended questions and rehearse the answers to these questions prior to being peer-assessed on Wednesday. The peer assessment will focus on knowledge, language and delivery.
Over the weekend could I please ask that the following tasks be attended to in preparation for Thursday evening?
- Finalizing the costume
- Sourcing a small question box
- Sourcing 2 items to reflect/symbolize the person’s profession or character
The girls have been enjoying their new novels and are underway with their novel study tasks. All girls have a reading target to meet for Monday or Tuesday.
You may have received notification from Seesaw this week. Your daughter used the App “Explain Everything” to reveal her problem solving strategy for finding the measure of a missing angle. This was our concluding activity and the assessment task was given yesterday. We will be busy with Maths over the next 2 weeks as we delve into Shapes and Transformations.
A reminder for next week:
A night at the Waxworks, Junior School Hall at 5:30 pm
Wishing you a lovely weekend and a Happy Mother’s Day!
Kind regards,
Jillian
Week 9
Dear Parents
The 4 day week has been so lovely and I trust your Easter weekend was an enjoyable time for you and the family.
This week we have written camp reflections with a focus on the highlights and the challenges of the 4 day adventure. The girls were asked to reflect on how they overcame certain challenges and what strategies they could apply should they be faced with a future challenge. The reflections can be viewed on Seesaw which is a new online journal that we have just started using. I sent a link in an email earlier this afternoon about how to access your daughter’s journal. I have really enjoyed reading these reflections as the girls were so honest in their writing about what they gained most from the camp experience and how they managed to deal with the challenges that they faced.
We have started our new Unit of Inquiry and I must say that I am enjoying reading about the significant Australians that have been discussed in family homes this week. The girls are sharing their blog posts in class on Monday so this will be a wonderful opportunity to hear some familiar names but perhaps some less familiar names as well!!
Yesterday the girls had the pleasure of hearing from a guest speaker from the Christian Blind Mission Disability Inclusive Development Program, Elena Down. Elena lost her hearing at a very young age, yet continued to achieve exceptional results at school and university, later becoming a lawyer. Her presentation to the girls was inspirational as she spoke to them about working with people with disabilities and being an advocate for the human rights of disabled people in developing countries. She is a quiet achiever and most certainly a significant Australian.
On Monday we will see the portraits of other significant Australians adorning the walls of the National Portrait Gallery between the times of 9:45 am and 11:45 am. We also have a number of guest speakers who will be presenting to the girls and their names are listed below:
- Associate Professor Kylie Catchpole from the Research School of Engineering at ANU
- Dr Sue Meek AO Chief Executive from the Australian Academy of Science
- Padma Raman CEO from the Australian Human Rights Commission
- Virginia Haussegger, ABC journalist
In Maths we have commenced studying angles and we have been measuring, drawing and classifying angles. The division algorithm has also been a focus this week.
In English, we have been studying the format and generic structure for writing a biography and we are now writing drafts for our first biography.
Highlights for Week 10
Monday : Harmony Day Assembly in the Hall. Some 6S students will be performing before and after assembly.
- Excursion to the National Portrait Gallery 9:45 am to 11:45 am (girls will eat a combined fruit break/early recess prior to leaving)
Weekly Update Week 7
Dear Parents,
A major focus this week has been the preparation and completion of the summative assessment task for our Unit of Inquiry. The girls have been required to write an essay that compares the ‘voices’ used to express the culture and values of two significant time periods – the ‘voice’ of 1813 Regency Era, England in the film trailer Pride and Prejudice, and the voice of more recent times in the Bollywood movie, Bride and Prejudice. Prior to writing the essay, the girls were required to analyse the film trailers to identify particular cultural and social values that were typical of the time. Visual literacy techniques were also identified and analysed.
This week, most of the girls completed the novel “The Long Walk” and it has been interesting to read their thoughts about the final chapter on our Class Blog. It certainly has been a book that has tied in nicely with our U of I as the voice of the main character allows us to experience the culture and values of a typical family who lived during the time of The Great Depression.
In Maths, the girls have revised concepts from the recent Assessment task and Problem Solving has been a focus. After camp, we will explore the division algorithm as well as angles and 3D shapes.
Please check in on the Class Blog: www.cggs6s.weebly.com (password:apple15) as I will endeavor to post photos from camp.
See you Monday morning,
Jillian
Weekly Update Week 6
Dear Parents,
How lovely it is to be looking forward to a long weekend!
This week we have reached the stage in our inquiry where we are making connections and drawing conclusions. We have viewed film trailers of ‘Kung Fu’ movies and explored how film is a voice that is used to explore the culture and values of China throughout time. The movies from China express many elements of cultural tradition such as a strict moral order, a hero who uses brilliant swordsmanship and martial arts whilst showing his devotion to a leader/emperor as well as the discipline and order of warriors. Magnificent scenery appears that captivates the viewer and we are drawn into the movie through brilliant costuming, fast paced action ant the gymnastics and discipline of kung fu. The voice of film is also used to provide a message of a strong, nation that is an international player, not necessarily dependent on the western world. Due to the popularity of kung fu, Hollywood has since assimilated the techniques and movements to employ in the movies that it produces.
The girls have been making connections with kung fu movies to our investigation of Bollywood movies as well as our excursion to the National Film and Sound Archives. They are drawing conclusions to realise how voice can be used to express the culture and values of a time. Next week, our summative task will be used to wrap up this unit of inquiry.
Thankyou to those of you who have been interviewed in preparation for our next unit of inquiry. The information gleaned by your daughter will be used to write a biography which is one of the key genres used in our next unit of inquiry. Perhaps the long weekend will be the perfect time for the interview to take place if it has not already occurred.
In Maths we have been exploring Order of Operations using BODMAS as well as applying the rule for triangular numbers. The girls are now familiar with terms ‘Highest Common Factor’ and ‘Lowest Common Multiple’ as well as square numbers, prime numbers, and factor trees. In our targeted Maths groups on Monday, we revised the use of the multiplication algorithm to ensure accuracy. Next week we will revise, use and apply the division algorithm.
Our reading of the “Long Walk” has almost come to an end – the girls have really enjoyed this novel and have engaged in the small group and whole class discussions that we have had this week. The girls were stepped through the process of writing a formal reading response and can be very pleased with the improvements made in regard to paragraph structure, selected use of quotes and explanation of ideas.
As you may be aware, the girls have been tasked with playing a board game as part of their Home Learning this week. I hope this is an activity that can be enjoyed at some stage over the 3 day weekend.
Yesterday we had a meeting regarding camp and the girls were encouraged to find their packing list and start the process of organising their clothing and other items. We have encouraged the girls to bring their PE shorts as these are of suitable length.
Enjoy the long weekend,
Jillian

Weekly Update Week 5
Dear Parents,
We have all been enjoying Green Week this week and we have had a productive week in the classroom.
In Unit of Inquiry we are investigating the Central Idea:
Voice can express and reflect the culture and values of a time.
Our focus this week has been on the lines of inquiry –
How culture influences the expression of voice and
How voice has changed over time
Our inquiry has taken us to exploring voice through the use of film (and film trailers) with a major focus on India and the emergence of Bollywood movies. Through film, we have traced the expression of values and culture over time as well as the techniques used in the selected film trailers. We even experimented with Bollywood style dance moves and came to realise that there is some work to do in order to perfect this style of dancing.
In leading up to this work, a detailed analysis of techniques used in producing the official “Harry Potter” movie trailer were analysed and explored in order to write an essay.
In Maths we have reviewed the subtraction algorithm, investigated prime numbers, composite numbers, square numbers, factors (including concept of highest common factor as well as factor trees) and multiples (including lowest common multiple). We have reviewed place value concepts and applied our understandings of larger numbers. Today we enjoyed using counters to investigate triangular numbers. The students were challenged with writing a ‘rule’ to determine the tenth triangular number without having to rely on the list of numbers that had gone before. We are in the process of testing out the ‘rule’ and will continue this into next week.
Our reading of the novel “The Long Walk” by Kerry Greenwood continues and by Monday the girls should have read up to Chapter 8 (end of Chapter 7). Next week we will be exploring Poetry as a form of ‘voice’ and in particular we will study the use of metaphors and the sonnet.
On Monday, the AFP will be visiting to speak with the Year 6 girls about Cybersafety. This visit will further enhance the work covered in preparation to obtaining digital licences.
In preparation for our next Unit of Inquiry on significant Australians, the girls will be asked to interview a family member as part of their Home Learning next week. There will be more information regarding this task emailed to you on Monday.
Please remember to check in on the Class Blog form time to time for photos and updates.

Weekly Update Week 4
6S Weekly Update Term 1, Week 4
Dear Parents,
Well – Week 4 has been an unusual week in Year 6 with the School swimming carnival, INCAS assessments, the 90th anniversary whole school photo, not to mention the presentation of the Rostrum speeches at the class level, as well as the year level final. As I explained to the class this afternoon, we will be diving back into our curriculum next week with gusto!
In Unit of Inquiry, we have continued to explore film trailers and the elements of design that are considered in creating the frames of a film or film trailer. Mis en scene is a term used in film to describe what factors are included in a frame of film and why. These factors include props, character costume/makeup, body language, facial expression, lighting and colour. The girls have started to analyse various film trailers in order to consider the conscious choice and use of these elements. This analysis will continue in Week 5.
This week we have continued to explore place value and we have investigated prime and composite numbers, as well as factor trees. Next week we will continue with the targeted Maths groups and explore square and triangular numbers as well as expanded notation and locating large numbers on a number line.
Our reading of the novel “The Long Walk” has continued to the end of Chapter 5 and on Monday I look forward to discussing the developments within the novel in our Literature Circle discussions. Could you please check in with your daughter to see that she is up to date with the reading of this novel.
This week, as you know, the girls presented their Rostrum speeches and I can honestly say that I was delighted with the quality of their speeches and presentations. I commend the girls for their efforts in writing, preparing and rehearsing their speeches in order to present with such poise, eloquence and confidence. These skills will certainly be beneficial to the girls in the future when presentations and speeches will need to be given to an audience. Congratulations to all the 6S girls and on Monday, Bella Mun and Persephone Bates D’Arbela will represent 6S in the Rostrum Finals (in Assembly.)
A reminder that Home Learning is due on Monday and includes Novel Study responses, Mathletics and a Blog response.

Weekly Update: Term 1 , Week 2
The term is well and truly underway with routines being established and co-curricular events getting underway.
In the classroom, we have been managing to progress with the Cybersafety program – despite a few glitches, and most of the girls have now completed the course. Once your daughter has completed the course, we ask that both you and your daughter sign the ICT page in the School Diary that talks about BYOD responsibilities. Further to this, that the class ICT agreement needs to be signed by both you and your daughter and then the e- form below should be completed:

This week in 6S:
Goal Setting:
This week the girls reflected on the Learner Profile attributes, the Transdisciplinary Skills as well as their previous years of learning, in order to identify an area that they would like to improve in. This was to become their academic goal for Term1. We discussed SMART goals (specific, measured, attainable, relevant and timely) and the girls managed to plan the steps that they would need to take in order to achieve their goals.
Maths: Our first unit on Number began with a pre-test of Year 6 standard skills & knowledge on place value, expanded notation, factors, prime/composite numbers, square numbers, the four operations & order of operations. There were also questions regarding the practical application of the four operations. We will analyse each girl’s responses so that we can create the five Maths groups (which will occur twice per week, rather than the once per week we had originally hoped for). We can then target the needs of all of our Maths students. The other 2-3 lessons per week will be in our usual Home Room groups. Once we have completed the term’s unit on Number, we will post-test the girls & should see improvements in their skills & knowledge.
English:
Today Janet Robertson introduced to the Year Six cohort the details of the 2016 Rostrum Public Speaking Competition. During Weeks 3 & 4, the girls will each prepare a 3 minute speech from a pre-set list of topics. Next week they will have one class English lesson to brainstorm ideas & begin their preliminary planning. Then, Home Learning during Weeks 3 & 4 will be used to research & write their content & rehearse their speeches. Yes, hand-sized palm cards can be used, the girls do not have to know their speeches off by heart. This unit of work covers the outcomes for the Year Six Speaking & Listening component of the National Curriculum. Each girl will present her 3 minute speech to the class during Week 4, where they will be given peer feedback & will be teacher assessed (for reports). The girls will be given a great deal of scaffolding for the content & presentation of their speeches.
FYI the set topics are: Oceans, Going to Rio, The year of the Monkey, I need more Time!, Board games & Keeping up with Technology.
For Home Learning, I have asked the girls to research what life was like for families during the Great Depression in readiness for the novels to be distributed on Monday. Results of the recent spelling assessment are being analysed in order to target the needs of the identified spelling groups.
UOI: We began our first Unit of Inquiry under the Transdisciplinary Theme of HOW WE EXPRESS OURSELVES. Our first unit covers the drama strand of the national curriculum & we look at how culture/time in history influences how we express our values. On Monday, the new SS drama teacher, Fiona Mahl, led the year level in some warm up drama activities. She will be working with all of the Year Six classes this term, including when we study a child-friendly version of Macbeth. The new JS Head, Angela Whittaker, also linked into our Central Idea by showing us the Chinese New Year celebrations which her school in Hong Kong celebrates.
The PE staff have asked us to remind you that the Years 3-6 Swimming Carnival will be held on Wednesday 24 February (Week 4). All of the information regarding the day is on Canvas, as is the online permission form. The PE staff have kindly requested that the online permission form (& I am also led to believe, the “signing up for events” form) be completed by Tuesday 16 February (next week).
Also Vicki Allen has asked us to forward to you:
Dear Year 6 Parents,
Further information to the French note sent out on Monday 8th February:
If you purchased the DVD Les Trois Petits Cochons in Year 4 then you already have this year’s play – Comment y aller? on that same DVD.
The Year 6 staff have been working on all things related to the Year 6 camp. We shall send home a hard copy of the camp notes asap (hopefully early next week) as well as emailing you soft copies, in case the hard copies are misplaced.

Weekly Update: Term 1, Week 1
Dear Parents,
It has certainly been a busy week in Year 6 but we have also enjoyed the various opportunities to get to know each other just that little bit more. I am certainly blessed with a lovely class and it has indeed been a pleasure to read the thoughtful and honest replies to the letters that I wrote to the girls earlier in the week. I have not only retrieved information about families and holiday escapades but also learning styles, reading habits and personal interests.
The highlight of our week was certainly Leadership Day on Thursday when we discussed the attributes of leaders, the importance of communication when working as a team, the value of team work as well as the sharing of goals and aspirations. The girls met with their committees for the first time in order to begin brainstorming ideas and suggestions for the first meeting with their mentors.
We have an exciting term planned and one that will be filled with 6S students working together in order to create a harmonious, supportive and prosperous classroom.
Throughout Week 2 the girls will continue to be involved in a number of learning activities which will encompass their ideas and thoughts pertaining to ‘what defines a quality classroom?’ A ‘chalk talk’ will allow the girls to write down their thoughts and comments on butchers paper and others can comment on and build upon the ideas that have been recorded. This will springboard discussions and allow us to draw out common ’themes’ and ideas.
Following on from this, the girls will unpack the PYP Learner Profile attributes and brainstorm ideas surrounding each attribute. These two activities will lead the girls to create our class Essential Agreement. An essential agreement throughout the PYP is a class consensus that will guide the behavioural expectations throughout the year. These are student centred notions that are meaningful and real. The essential agreement is an important product for a classroom. Each statement created outlines the sort of culture that the students feel should be developed throughout the year.
Next week we will commence the ‘How we express ourselves’ inquiry with the details as follows:
Central Idea: Voice can express and reflect the culture and values of a time
Lines of Inquiry:
Different forms of artistic expression
How voice has changed over time
How culture influences the expression of voice
Concepts: Form, Change, Connection
There will be some pretesting in Maths related to Number and Place Value early in the week and results from these tests will inform the structure of our program in the classroom. Literature studies will also begin next week and I look forward to discussing our first novel when I meet with the girls.
Please take time to view our Leadership Day photos on the Class Blog :
